The 4th Annual Mike Schultz Skydiving Skills Fun Meet
Events | Formations | Scoring and Awards
The Events:
- Speed Formation/Formation Skydiving (SF/FS)
- Formation Skydiving Exits (4-way) (FSE-4)
- Team and Individual Accuracy (TA/IA)
- Staff Challenge and Surprise Events (BS)
Speed Formation/Formation Skydiving (SF/FS) (2-jumps):
- One jumper will be rear float, and one front float, while not linked to any teammate. Outside and inside centers must be linked to one another.
- Forty seconds total working time allowed (from 13.5K), judged by in-air video.
- Points awarded for both speed segment and correct formations built.
- The formations and sequence will be selected by RW Concepts Grand Pooh-Bah, and posted in advance at DZ and on the website.
Formation Skydiving Exits (FSE-4) (2-jumps):
- From the common 4-way Formation Skydiving pool, two will be announced and posted prior to the meet.
- Judging will be by static video from inside the aircraft.
- During the remainder of the dive, teams may practice the Formation Skydive segment of the SF/FS jump described above.
Team Accuracy/Individual Accuracy (TA/IA)(2 team jumps, 6 individual):
- All 6 jumps (4 from the other categories) will be scored for both team and individual accuracy honors, and one team will be declared the “stack-out” event winner as well.
- The last jump of each day will be a team “stack-out” from 5,000 feet AGL, with each team having their own jump run, spotted and released by the Team Captain (TC) or designee.
- The stack order among the members will be predetermined by the TC, and both order and spacing between jumpers will be judged on the ground, as will foot placement, pattern discipline, orientation into the wind, adequacy of the TC release point, and whether the landing is of the controlled standing type, or not.
Staff Challenge and Surprise Events:
- A challenge should be issued to “The Staff” from the team with the best score on the SF/FS jump, to see if the sky gods can best that mark.
- There will potentially be pop quiz and other skydiving related skills demonstrations for extra points for the team.
Administrative and Safety Notes:
- Judging and scoring scheme will be posted at the DZ, and, time permitting, online.
- Accuracy honors will be awarded to Team Overall, Team Stack-Out, and Individuals who place first in Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice divisions. You will also be able to see how you rank by comparison to all others.
- Team composition will be the best mix of the varied talent levels. Teams so constructed during the last year’s event may remain intact for this meet on the approval of the Meet Director (MD), but you can disband and distance yourself from the other knuckleheads if you wish.
- Eligible competitors will have 75 jumps as the entry-level minimum, but an appeal may be made to the MD using personal references or video evidence that you “got skills.”
- Commitment for both weekend days of the event is ideal. The first-day final registration and briefing will begin at 0800 (8 o’clock) on the creeper pad. The FSE-4 formations and exits will be announced and demonstrated, the teams will be formed or finalized, and a safety briefing accomplished. Be ready for a 20-minute call ½ hour after release from the briefing.
- Teams that are incomplete at any time thereafter can merge with members of other teams similarly afflicted, but those members will only be eligible for individual honors in accuracy, and they could conceivably be in a position to issue the “Staff Challenge” if they have the best score on either of the SF/FS jumps.
- Order of events ideally will be FSE-4, so a team can practice the FS segment of the SF/FS event, which should be the second jump each day. The intent is to have the Stack-Out Team Accuracy event on the last jump of each day. Since each team gets their own pass (jump run), there will be other teams and spectators watching, and on the last day, the teams will exit in reverse order, with the leaders going last.
- Mike Davidson, the “MD” will serve as Chief Judge. Other anointed officials are Gary Coffey, a surprise guest, and additional volunteers are welcome. Video volunteers are needed, and a nominal entrance fee will pay their slots.
- Team Captains (TC) should be elected by teammates, but will be appointed by the MD if members cannot decide. That person need not be the one from the Advanced Category. TCs will take issues to the MD or Manifest, delegate team duties, and ensure timeliness and safe actions of the members.
- All participants will get a reserve pin check by a teammate, excepting those that have Racer or Reflex containers that have inaccessible pins. AADs, if installed, will be activated.
- The Accuracy Rings that denote value (points) will be extensive, so there is a good likelihood that you will score some points for your team. Unsafe canopy piloting will cause deductions, and the 911 call will be delayed so one can think about the judgment lapse while in familiar surroundings and amongst friends. TCs will designate and set the landing direction under “no-wind” conditions.
- Stack-out jump runs will be into the wind if at all possible, but this remains pilot’s discretion. The illuminated green light will only indicate that the jumping environment is safe, with the release point on the TCs command, which can only be given if the light remains on. In the event of light failure, the pilot will say “HOT-TARGET” once for OK, and “NO-JUMP” 3 times for abort or end of safe jump run.
- Spotting commands will be relayed to the pilot with direction of desired aircraft ground track change first, followed by degrees of change NTE 20 degrees at the start of jump run, and 10 degrees after crossing the target center area.
- Forty seconds is enough time from 13.5K AGL to break-off by 5K AGL. Any low pull or endangerment of the videographer in the center slot will cause point deductions or grounding.
- Pre-registration with tentative team composition can be done on the website meet page at www.skydivedelmarva.com
This is a parachuting skills demonstration and development FUN event named for Mike Schultz, who is still very much alive!
Good sportsmanship will serve to honor a man with a long history in the Eastern Region.
